You post a reel. It does well. Dozens of people comment “price?” and “details pls”. You reply to a few, miss the rest, and the ones you reply to publicly never see it.
Comment-to-DM automation turns every one of those comments into a direct message, automatically, within seconds.
How it works
1. You connect your Instagram professional account to an automation tool
2. You pick a post or reel, and set a keyword, for example PRICE
3. You write the DM that should be sent
4. Your caption says: “Comment PRICE and I’ll DM you the details”
5. Someone comments PRICE
6. The tool replies publicly (optional) and sends them a DM instantly
7. The conversation is now in your inbox, with that person as a lead
Why it works better than “link in bio”
| Link in bio | Comment-to-DM |
Steps for the customer | Leave the post, open profile, tap link, load page | Type one word |
Where it ends | A webpage | A conversation you can continue |
Follow-up possible | Only if they fill a form | Yes, directly in DM |
Effect on the post | None | Comments boost reach |
Who you capture | Anonymous visitors | Named accounts you can reply to |
The side effect matters: every keyword comment is a comment, and comments help the post reach more people. The automation increases the reach of the post that is driving it.
What Meta allows
Instagram’s official API supports sending a message in response to a comment on your own post. That is the mechanism these tools use.
What is not allowed: DMing people who have had no interaction with you, scraping accounts, and mass messaging. The customer’s comment is the permission. Keep it that way.
Meta changes messaging rules and windows periodically. Check the current Instagram Messaging documentation before relying on any specific behaviour.
Keyword choices
Good keywords are short, one word, easy to type and specific to the offer:
Offer | Keyword |
Price list | PRICE |
Course details | LEARN |
Appointment | BOOK |
Catalogue | CATALOG |
Offer code | OFFER |
Free guide | GUIDE |
Stock check | STOCK |
Demo | DEMO |
Avoid common words that appear in normal comments, like “nice” or “super”, or you will DM people who were only complimenting you.
Add the obvious variants: PRICE, price, Price, PRIZE, and the Tanglish version if your audience uses it.
Caption examples
New collection just dropped 🧵 Comment PRICE and I’ll send you the full rate list on DM.
3-day digital marketing workshop, Coimbatore. Comment LEARN for the syllabus and fees.
Only 12 slots left this week. Comment BOOK and we’ll hold a slot for you.
Say the keyword clearly, in capitals, and say what they will get.
The DM that follows
Do not just dump a price list. Structure it:
Hi! Thanks for your interest 🙌 Here’s our rate list: [link or list] Which one are you looking at? I’ll check availability for you.
Giving the information and asking a question is what turns a comment into a conversation. A DM that ends in a full stop ends the lead.
Then qualify and follow up
• Ask one qualifying question: size, date, budget range, city
• Save the lead with a tag
• Follow up once after 24 hours if they went quiet
• Do not send five follow-ups; you will be reported and blocked
Measure the right things
Metric | What it tells you |
Keyword comments per post | Whether the caption CTA is clear |
DMs delivered | Whether the automation is working |
Replies to the DM | Whether your message invites a response |
Qualified enquiries | Whether the audience is the right one |
Customers and revenue | Whether Instagram is actually earning |
Track which posts generate the most keyword comments, and make more of those.
Common mistakes
• A keyword nobody can remember
• No instruction in the caption, so nobody comments it
• A DM that is a wall of text
• No follow-up on the leads collected
• Running it on a post that no longer reflects your prices
• Not having anyone available to continue the conversations it creates
Frequently asked questions
Does the person need to follow me? No. Anyone who comments can receive the automated DM, subject to Instagram’s current messaging rules.
Will Instagram restrict my account for this? Not when using the official API in response to comments on your own posts. Unsolicited mass DMs are a different matter.
Can I use different keywords on different posts? Yes, and you should. Each post can have its own keyword and its own DM.
