Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website appears in search results: which searches show your site, how often people click, and whether Google has problems reading your pages.

If you care about getting customers from Google, Search Console is essential. Here’s how to use it without being technical.

What Search Console tells you

• The search phrases people used to find your site

• How many times your pages appeared (impressions) and were clicked

• Your average position for each search

• Which pages are indexed, and which are not

• Errors that stop pages from appearing in Google

• Mobile usability and page experience issues

• Sites linking to yours

• Security issues or manual actions

How to set it up

1. Go to Google Search Console and sign in with your business Google account.

2. Add your website as a property; the domain option covers all versions.

3. Verify ownership, usually through a DNS record or a file added by your developer.

4. Submit your XML sitemap (often yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml).

5. Link Search Console to Google Analytics 4.

Data starts appearing within a few days.

Five monthly checks for business owners

1. Performance report: top queries. Which searches bring clicks? Are they the services you want to sell?

2. Pages with high impressions but low clicks. Improve their title tags and meta descriptions to win more clicks.

3. Keywords ranking in positions 8–20. These “almost page one” keywords are your quickest wins. Improve the content and internal links on those pages.

4. Indexing report. Check that important pages are indexed. Investigate pages marked “not indexed” if they should appear.

5. Manual actions and security issues. These should always show “No issues detected”.

Search Console vs Google Analytics

Search Console shows what happens in Google search before someone clicks. Google Analytics shows what visitors do on your site after they arrive, from every channel. Use both together.
