Instagram gives businesses a lot of numbers. Most of them do not change what you should do next. These are the ones that do, and what each should make you act on.

The metrics that matter

Reach and accounts reached

How many unique accounts saw your content. More useful than impressions, which counts repeat views.

What to do with it: compare reach between followers and non-followers. If almost all your reach is existing followers, your content is not being pushed to new people, which usually means low saves and shares.

Engaged accounts

Unique accounts that interacted. A better quality signal than total likes.

What to do with it: engaged accounts divided by accounts reached is your real engagement rate. Track it over time, not against other people’s benchmarks.

Saves and shares

The strongest signals on Instagram. A save means useful. A share means worth passing on. Both push your content to new audiences.

What to do with it: find your top-saved and top-shared posts. Make more of that format and topic. This is the fastest way to grow reach.

Profile views

People who saw your content and wanted to know who you are: buying intent.

What to do with it: if profile views are high but DMs and link taps are low, your bio and highlights are the problem, not your content.

Follower growth, and where it comes from

Net growth matters more than total count, and the source matters more than both.

What to do with it: growth with no change in enquiries means you are attracting the wrong audience.

Story metrics

• Completion rate: how many watched to the end

• Taps forward: a slide people skipped

• Exits: where you lost them

• Replies and sticker taps: real interest

What to do with it: cut the slides people skip. Keep story sequences short.

Reel metrics

• Watch time and average watch time

• Replays

• Reach from non-followers

What to do with it: if people drop off in the first three seconds, fix your opening, not your topic.

DM volume and response time

Rarely shown in standard analytics, and often the most commercially important pair of numbers you have.

What to do with it: measure first response time. Faster replies convert more. Automation is how you get it down.

Leads and revenue

How many enquiries came from Instagram, and how much those customers paid.

What to do with it: this is the number that decides your Instagram budget. Everything above is a means to it.

Metrics that mislead

Metric

Why it misleads

Follower count

Can grow without any sales effect

Likes

Cheapest interaction; weak buying signal

Impressions

Inflated by repeat views

Comment count

Includes emoji and tag-a-friend comments

Hashtag reach

Usually a small share of total reach

None of these are useless, but none should drive decisions on their own.

A warning about Instagram’s data retention

Instagram’s own insights hold a limited history. If you want year-on-year comparison or long-term trends, you need a tool that stores your data continuously. Start collecting before you need it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate? It varies by industry and account size. Compare yourself to your own past, not to other accounts.

Why is my reach falling? Usually content, format or frequency, or a shift in what the audience responds to. Check saves and shares first.

Which metric should I report to management? Enquiries and revenue from Instagram, with reach and engagement as supporting context.
