The first meeting with a web design company usually goes well. Everyone is friendly, the portfolio looks good and the price seems fair. Problems tend to appear later: delays, extra charges, a site that does not rank, or a developer who stops answering.
Asking the right questions upfront avoids most of this. Here are twelve, with the answers you should hope to hear.
About the design
1. “Will my design be custom or based on a template?”
Both can work. What matters is honesty. A template-based site should be cheaper and faster. A custom design should include mock-ups for your approval before development starts.
2. “How many design revisions are included?”
Two or three rounds is common. Unlimited revisions often means vague scope. Get the number in writing.
3. “Can I see live sites similar to mine?”
Look for sites in your industry or with features you need, such as booking or online ordering. Open them on your phone and check the speed.
About cost and scope
4. “What exactly is included in this price?”
You want a written list: pages, features, content writing, images, SEO setup, domain, hosting, email and support. Anything not listed will probably cost extra.
5. “What will cost extra later?”
Common extras: additional pages, new features, content changes after launch, premium plugins and yearly renewals. A good agency tells you now.
6. “What is the payment schedule?”
A typical split is a deposit to start, a payment on design approval and the balance at launch. Be careful with 100% upfront.
About ownership
7. “Who will own the domain, hosting and website?”
The right answer: you do. The domain should be registered in your business name, and you should have admin access to hosting and the website.
8. “Will I be able to update content myself?”
Ask for a short training session or video so you can change text, images and prices without calling the agency every time.
About results
9. “How will the site help me get found on Google?”
Listen for specifics: page titles and meta descriptions, fast loading, mobile-first design, clean URLs, a sitemap, Google Search Console setup and schema markup. “We do SEO” alone is not an answer.
10. “How will visitors contact me?”
A good web design company thinks about enquiries: WhatsApp and call buttons, short forms, booking, clear calls to action on every page, and tracking so you can count leads.
About time and support
11. “What is the timeline, and what do you need from me?”
Delays often come from waiting on the client for content and photos. Agree on dates for both sides.
12. “What happens after launch?”
Ask about the free support period, monthly maintenance cost, backups, security updates and response times. A website is not finished at launch.
A simple way to compare answers

The best choice is rarely the cheapest or the most expensive. It is the one with clear answers.
