Two pages can target the same keyword, but only one ranks. Often the difference is search intent: what the searcher actually wants when they type the query. Google rewards pages that match that need.
The four main types of intent
Intent | What the searcher wants | Example searches | Best page type |
Informational | To learn or understand | “what is seo”, “how to fix slow website” | Guide, blog post, video |
Commercial | To compare options before buying | “best web design company coimbatore”, “shopify vs woocommerce” | Comparison, review, list, buyer’s guide |
Transactional | To buy, book or contact | “website design company coimbatore”, “book dentist appointment” | Service page, product page, booking page |
Navigational | To reach a specific brand or site | “fluxx tech”, “google search console login” | Homepage, brand page |
How to identify intent
The easiest way: search the keyword and study the first page of Google.
• Are the top results service pages, blog posts, lists or videos?
• Is there a Maps pack (local intent)?
• Are there shopping results (product intent)?
• What questions appear in “People also ask”?
Google’s results show you what it believes searchers want.
Matching intent on your pages
• Service keyword? Create a focused service page with offer, process, proof, pricing guide and a clear call to action.
• Question keyword? Write a helpful guide that answers it fully, then link to the related service.
• Comparison keyword? Create an honest comparison with tables and recommendations.
• Local keyword? Strengthen your Google Business Profile and local service pages.
Signs of an intent mismatch
• A blog post trying to rank for “web design company in Coimbatore” when Google shows service pages and Maps results
• A service page trying to rank for “how to design a website” when Google shows tutorials
• High impressions but very low clicks and no enquiries
Mixed intent
Some searches have more than one intent. For example, “website cost” attracts both researchers and buyers. Cover the information clearly and include a strong next step for those ready to act.
Frequently asked questions
Can one page target several intents? It’s usually better to have separate pages, linked together, for learning and buying.
Does intent change over time? Yes. Google adjusts results as behaviour changes, so check the results page again when rankings change.
How does intent affect conversions? Matching intent brings visitors who are ready for what your page offers, so more of them enquire.
