Google’s results page is no longer just ten blue links. It includes maps, answer boxes, questions, images, videos, shopping results and AI-generated summaries. These are called SERP features (search engine results page features). Some searches end without any click, because the answer is shown directly.
Common SERP features
Feature | What it shows | How to compete |
Local pack (Maps) | Three local businesses with a map | Google Business Profile, reviews, local SEO |
Featured snippet | A quoted answer from a page | Clear question-and-answer content |
People Also Ask | Expandable related questions | FAQ-style content answering related questions |
Image pack | A row of images | Image SEO, descriptive alt text and file names |
Video results | YouTube and other videos | YouTube SEO, chapters, descriptions |
Shopping results | Products with prices | Google Merchant Center, product feeds |
AI overviews | AI-generated summaries with source links | Clear, trustworthy, well-structured content |
Knowledge panel | Business or entity information | Consistent business info, Google Business Profile |
Top stories | News articles | Timely news content from news publishers |
Zero-click searches
Some searches are answered without a click: weather, conversions, simple facts, opening hours or phone numbers shown in the Maps panel.
For local businesses, many “zero-click” searches still bring value: a customer may call you directly from your Google Business Profile or get directions without visiting your website.
How to adapt
1. Track more than website clicks. Count calls, directions and messages from your Google profile.
2. Target features in your niche. Search your main keywords and note which features appear.
3. Answer questions clearly for snippets, People Also Ask and AI overviews.
4. Invest in your Google Business Profile for local searches.
5. Use images and videos where those features appear.
6. Focus on queries with buying intent, where people still click to compare and contact.
Frequently asked questions

Which SERP feature matters most for local businesses? Usually the local Maps pack.
Can I control which features appear? No, but you can make your content eligible and competitive for them.
