Shopify makes launching an online store easy, and it handles many SEO basics automatically: sitemaps, SSL and mobile-friendly themes. But to rank for competitive product and category searches, you still need to optimise your store.
1. Titles and meta descriptions
In each product, collection and page, edit the “Search engine listing” section:
• A unique title with the main keyword and a key attribute
• A meta description that sells the click: benefits, offers, delivery
• A clean URL handle, such as /products/cotton-kurti-blue
2. Collection pages: your biggest opportunity
Collections often rank for the most valuable category keywords.
• Write a helpful introduction of 100–200 words
• Use a clear H1 with the category keyword
• Link to related collections and buying guides
• Keep collections focused rather than huge and mixed
3. Product pages
• Write original descriptions; avoid copying manufacturer text
• Include materials, sizes, use cases and care instructions
• Several high-quality images with alt text
• Customer reviews, using a reviews app
• Clear delivery, return and payment information
4. Duplicate URLs
Shopify can create several URLs for the same product, for example when it is reached through a collection. Shopify adds canonical tags pointing to the main product URL, but check that your theme links to the canonical product URLs where possible, and avoid creating many near-duplicate products for small variant differences.
5. Speed
• Choose a fast, well-coded theme
• Limit apps; each can add scripts that slow the store
• Compress images before uploading
• Remove unused apps completely, including leftover code
6. Structured data
Most modern themes include Product schema. Check it with Google’s Rich Results Test, and make sure price, availability and reviews display correctly.
7. Blog and content
Use Shopify’s blog for buying guides, comparisons and care guides that link to products and collections.
8. Google Merchant Center
Connect your store to Google Merchant Center to appear in free product listings and run Shopping ads.
9. Redirects
When you delete products or change URLs, set up redirects in Shopify’s navigation settings to keep traffic and rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify bad for SEO? No. Shopify stores rank well when titles, collections, content and speed are handled properly.
Can I edit robots.txt on Shopify? Shopify allows robots.txt customisation through a theme template. Change it only if you understand the impact.
Do SEO apps help? Some help with images, schema or redirects, but don’t install many; they can slow your store.
