Technical SEO makes sure Google can find, crawl and understand your website. Great content cannot rank if Google cannot index it or if the site is painfully slow. The good news: most small business sites need the same handful of fixes.
Work through this checklist, or share it with your developer.
Crawling and indexing
• ☐ Website verified in Google Search Console
• ☐ XML sitemap created and submitted
• ☐ robots.txt does not block important pages
• ☐ Important pages are indexed (check the Pages report in Search Console)
• ☐ No accidental “noindex” tags on pages that should rank
• ☐ Thin or test pages are noindexed or removed
Site structure
• ☐ Clear navigation to every important page within a few clicks
• ☐ Short, readable URLs, such as /services/web-development
• ☐ Every important page linked from at least one other page (no orphan pages)
Duplicate content
• ☐ One version of the site: https and either www or non-www, with redirects from the others
• ☐ No duplicate copies of pages, such as test homepages, left live and indexed
• ☐ Canonical tags on pages with URL parameters or variants
Speed and Core Web Vitals
• ☐ Images compressed and sized correctly, in modern formats where possible
• ☐ Caching and a CDN enabled where available
• ☐ Unused plugins and scripts removed
• ☐ Core Web Vitals checked in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console
Mobile and security
• ☐ Responsive design that works on every screen size
• ☐ Text readable without zooming; buttons easy to tap
• ☐ HTTPS on every page with a valid SSL certificate
• ☐ No mixed content warnings
Errors and redirects
• ☐ Broken internal links fixed
• ☐ Old URLs 301-redirected to the right new pages
• ☐ No redirect chains or loops
• ☐ A helpful custom 404 page
Structured data
• ☐ LocalBusiness or Organization schema on the homepage and contact page
• ☐ Service, Product, FAQ or Article schema where relevant
• ☐ Schema tested with Google’s Rich Results Test
How often to check
Run a full technical check every quarter, and after any redesign, migration or major plugin update. Search Console emails you when it finds new issues, so make sure the right person receives them.
